ICYMI: Republican AGs are on the wrong side of the Constitution, their own party, and the American people on Trump’s fake national emergency

March 15, 2019

Republican AGs are on the wrong side of the Constitution, their own party, and the American people on Trump’s fake national emergency.

Today, RAGA Co-chairs Texas AG Ken Paxton and Indiana AG Curtis Hill joined Louisiana AG Jeff Landry (who is up for re-election this fall btw) to pen an op-ed in USA Today on how the national emergency declaration, which let’s not forget Trump said he “didn’t need to do,” was constitutional.

Not quite. Yesterday, four additional Democratic AGs joined the multistate lawsuit challenging Trump’s fake emergency and his attempt to divert funding appropriated by Congress for other purposes. The now 20 Democratic AG strong lawsuit alleges the Trump Administration’s action exceeds the power of the executive office, violating the U.S. Constitution and federal statutes.

Oh, and the funny part? In their op-ed, the Republican AGs argue “Congress should support President Trump.” Interesting they should suggest such a thing on the same day the GOP-controlled Senate rebuked Trump on this major campaign promise. As a reminder, the House passed a resolution last month to block the erroneous national emergency declaration.

It’s clear the Republican committee leaders are on the wrong side of the American people. Just yesterday, a POLITICO/Morning Consult poll dropped showing a majority of voters continue to oppose Trump’s declaration of a national emergency at the southern border.

Thankfully, as Democratic AGs have shown in pervious lawsuits, such as protecting DACA recipients and standing up against the President’s attempts to separate children from their families, they will never hesitate to fight for what is right—especially when it comes to Trump’s bigoted and dangerous immigration agenda. Unfortunately, we cannot say the same of the Republican AGs.

Our democracy can't wait.
