RANDY SEILER

CANDIDATE FOR ATTORNEY GENERAL OF SOUTH DAKOTA

Intro

As Attorney General, Randy will honor the values that make South Dakota a great place to live and raise a family. He will take on the tough issues of violent crime, drug addiction, child abuse, school safety, and public corruption, while also realizing that these challenges are much bigger than any one person can solve. Randy plans to bring his depth and breadth of experience to the office of Attorney General in order to keep South Dakota safe.

Early Life and Education

Randy is a life-long South Dakotan and native of Herreid. After his second year at South Dakota State University, Randy was drafted and served in the U.S. Air Force, including a year-long tour in Vietnam. Upon completion of his military service, Randy graduated from the University of Nebraska-Omaha with a degree in Criminal Justice. He later attended law school at the University of South Dakota, where he served as the Editor-In-Chief of the Law Review and graduated with honors.

Career Highlights

After law school, Randy clerked for a Senior United States District Judge. He went on to set up a law practice in Mobridge, South Dakota to be near his family. In 1995, Randy began a distinguished career with the United States Department of Justice. As an Assistant U.S. Attorney, he led the prosecution on a number of complex crimes and earned a reputation for taking on and winning the tough cases.

Randy has received numerous commendations for his work finding justice for victims and their families. In 2001, he received the U.S. Department of Justice Attorney General’s Award for Fraud Prevention. In 2009, he became the first recipient of the U.S. Attorney Director’s Award for Superior Performance in Indian Country.

Later on, as the U.S. Attorney for South Dakota, Randy led a team of sixty lawyers and support staff, responsible for the prosecution of federal felony crimes and representation of the Federal Government in civil matters. He worked with tribal justice officials and leaders to foster government-to-government relationships with the nine sovereign tribal governments and their citizens.

Randy worked closely with the FBI, as well as state, tribal and local law enforcement, in prosecuting major crimes such as murder, rape, child sexual abuse, human trafficking and public corruption. As South Dakota’s chief federal law enforcement officer, Randy oversaw multi-agency collaboration that targeted human and drug trafficking and protected our state’s wildlife.

Randy’s focus, however, has always been broader than criminal prosecution. Under his leadership, the South Dakota U.S. Attorney’s office designated a full-time civil rights lawyer and expanded outreach to promote equality and combat hate crimes and discrimination.

Personal Life

Randy currently lives in Fort Pierre, South Dakota with his wife Wanda and dog Nelson. He enjoys running, taking the boat out on the river, and trying to keep up with his grandchildren.
