The Democratic Attorneys General Association Supports Dana Nessel for Michigan Attorney General

Nessel will be the First Openly Gay Candidate to Run for Statewide Office in Michigan

Washington, D.C.—  On the heels of the 2018 Michigan Democratic Party State Endorsement Convention on Sunday, the Democratic Attorneys General Association (DAGA) endorsed Dana Nessel for Michigan Attorney General. Nessel, a former prosecutor who teamed up with Wayne County Prosecutor, Kym Worthy, to create the Fair Michigan Justice Project, a first of its kind task force which investigates and prosecutes hate crimes committed against the LGBTQ community, is a renowned defender of constitutional rights. Nessel is also part of the inaugural class of  DAGA’s 1881 Initiative, a program to elect more Democratic women to office of Attorney General.

“We are proud to support Dana Nessel for Michigan Attorney General. Nessel is a relentless fighter for justice and progressive values,” said Sean Rankin, Executive Director of the Democratic Attorneys General Association. “Like our current Democratic Attorneys General, Nessel knows the important role Attorneys General play in protecting the people and making sure that everyone—regardless of race, religion, gender, orientation, income, or ability—has an elected official who fight for them.”

The bid for the Michigan Democratic Party endorsement in the Attorneys General race was close between two strong candidates. The endorsements won’t become official, however until the party’s summer convention in August. Nessel’s Democratic primary opponent was former U.S. Attorney Pat Miles. Miles urged followers to get behind her campaign, saying, “I will fully support the Democratic ticket in the fall. We need to take the state back for the Democratic party. We need to unify the party.”

“We are very proud of the efforts of both Democratic candidates”, continued Rankin. “We saw Nessel build a positive and effective campaign that really propelled her to win the support of the party yesterday. From visiting communities in every corner of the state, to speaking out on the critical issues facing the state of Michigan and the country—we have no doubt that Nessel will be an outstanding Attorney General.”

The Democratic Attorneys General Association (DAGA) is the only political organization solely dedicated to identifying, electing, supporting, and elevating Democrats that serve or seek to serve as State Attorneys General. From bringing those outside of the political arena into the fold through partnerships with General Assembly to driving the 1881 Initiative to elect more Democratic women to the office of Attorney General with Emerge America, DAGA continues to prioritize innovation, data, communication, and relationship building as key elements to providing political and policy support to Democratic State Attorneys General and candidates.
